Heads-Up Poker: Roadmap To Success – Part 2

This article is from Pokerfornia, the leading source of California poker casinos review.

This part of our series will focus on playing in position, board textures and continuation bets. Your game plan should be as follows:

1/ You should fire continuation bets on the flop as a default line againt opponents that you have no history with. A continuation bet is simply a continuation of your pre-flop action. So if you raised pre-flop on the button, you will bet the flop as well to show that you are still strong. When your opponents start playing back at you, then you should lower your c-betting frequency.

2/ You should consider flop texture in your post flop decisions. Let’s say that your opponent sees that you are c-betting 100% of flops. He has now adapted by check raising some flops with semi bluffs or sometimes with air. The best way to combat this is to consider board texture. If the flop texture is  J 10 9 with 2 hearts and you opened pre-flop, then you may not want to c-bet this flop if you miss. This is because of three combined factors: 1/The flop texture is very likely to have hit your opponent, 2/ you have been c-betting most flops, 3/ you have a very bad image. If you have a marginal hand on the flop, then checking in position can be a great play there. Checking allows to protect your hand and get to showdown.

3/ You should defend your button. If you are getting 3 bet a large frequency, then you should defend your button with some decent hands from time to time. This is because your opponent’s range of hands will be wide and they will be playing out of position. You should call with hands like suited connectors in this spot. Although you are playing heads up, if you call a re-raise with 79 suited on the button, you should be wise not to overplay your hand. I would be cautious felting off with a 7 or a 9 weak kicker on the flop. In general, if you hit a 7 or a 9, proceed with caution and go for pot control. What matters most is that you think you are ahread of his range.
